This building’s mechanical system was a geothermal water-source heat pump served by a well field consisting of 192 wells, each at a 400’ bore depth. The design included centrally located mechanical rooms to house all air-side equipment, while a separate mechanical room housed the primary-secondary pumping system to achieve additional energy savings by reducing pump power. There are 64 heat pumps and five water-source energy recovery units to provide one-to-one zoning for each space. Advanced duct design was implemented, including duct lagging, acoustic liner, and sealing of annular spaces. Attention to the visual impact of duct systems was also needed to condition large collaboration and presentation areas throughout the school.
Steeplechase Elementary incorporated the latest LED lighting and digital controls, creating aesthetically exciting learning and collaboration spaces. All lighting is sensor- and time-clock-based, as well as manual controls, and is managed via the building automation system. The school’s facilities department has direct/remote access for programming, maintenance, and/or usage and data-trending reports. Power needs were met with plentiful receptacles, including USB charging ports where appropriate, to support the demanding needs of a technology-enhanced learning environment. In addition to code-required systems such as voice evacuation, fire alarm, and communications, this school is equipped with advanced IP-based CCTV security, intrusion protection, intercom/paging, classroom sound reinforcement, and large-venue sound systems / large format screens for the gymnasium, cafeteria, and central nucleus.
