The KSU Atwood project was a 34,000-square-foot renovation of an existing laboratory building at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky. This facility included 14 research laboratories, classrooms, a teaching laboratory, and offices for 30 faculty and staff, as well as approximately 100 students.
HVAC systems consisted of a VRV heat recovery system and chilled water/hot water air-handling units, fed by variable-speed base-mounted pumps. Exhaust and make-up air for laboratory spaces are precisely controlled to maintain a constant air change per hour and differential room pressure. This was accomplished by integrating the building automation system with Strobic exhaust fans, Phoenix exhaust and supply valves, and make-up air unit controls. Plumbing systems included acid waste piping, a new vacuum pump and piping, domestic hot and cold water distribution, and emergency shower/eyewashes with thermostatic mixing valves.
The electrical power system consisted of a new 120/208V 3-phase electrical service for normal power and a standby diesel generator for emergency power to life-safety loads and owner-selected equipment within the building. Laboratory lighting is accomplished with direct/indirect pendant-hung luminaires to illuminate to laboratory standards. Volumetric troffer-style luminaires are utilized for general lighting in other areas of the facility.
