The Michter’s Distillery is located in the historic Fort Nelson Building in downtown Louisville. A 550-gallon pot still was installed, and three cypress wood fermentors that were plucked from a previous Michter’s distilling site in Pennsylvania were moved in as well.
A variable-capacity refrigerant system (VRF) with energy recovery was used to provide heating and cooling to the building. The advantage is that this system takes up a small footprint on such a compact site. High-efficiency LED lighting was utilized throughout the building, including the decorative and accent fixtures in the public areas. A fully functioning distillery is integrated into the building, with mash cooking, distilling, and barreling all occurring on-site. This allows visitors to experience the entire bourbon-making process.
