The Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Hospital Pharmacy Renovation was an interior renovation that converted an existing basement area into a pharmacy within an active hospital. The work included demolishing and replacing mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems to support a new layout and improved workflow. The design integrated with the existing building systems and kept the hospital running throughout construction, with careful planning for phasing, shutdowns, and infection control.
Mechanical systems were reworked to improve temperature control and ventilation, using a central air-handling system with ducted air distribution routed above the ceiling to serve individual rooms. Venturi valve boxes are used in the compounding pharmacy and the IV and Chemo room to maintain pressure and temperature in those spaces. Variable-air-volume boxes with electric reheat were provided to maintain zone-level temperature control and respond to varying loads in the pharmacy spaces. New supply, return, and exhaust ductwork were installed, along with diffusers and return air devices arranged to support proper airflow distribution and pressure relationships. Plumbing extended existing water and waste systems to serve new sinks and equipment, including pumped waste where needed. Electrical updates expanded both normal and essential power, refreshed lighting and controls, and supported equipment and low-voltage systems, such as data, access control, and fire alarm. The design focused on staying code-compliant, maintaining system reliability, and integrating seamlessly into the existing facility.
