More than engineers. Trusted partners.

Shrout Tate Wilson engineers are known for their technical sharpness and for being approachable, responsive partners. Many of our clients have worked with the same engineers for decades. Continuity, care, and consistency are rare in this field, and it’s one of our proudest features.

Independent. Invested. Accessible.

Since 1981, Shrout Tate Wilson has delivered MEP design services with a balance of deep technical expertise and genuine, people-first values. We’re not just here to design systems; we’re here to make your project smoother, smarter, and more successful at every phase.

We’re proud to be a mid-size, privately held firm with hands-on partners and no distant corporate board. Each of our leaders brings distinct expertise, character, and care to every project. We hire locally, build teams to last, and stay deeply rooted in the communities we serve.

Years of Engineering Leadership

We are the standard.
We believe sustainability and performance go hand-in-hand, which is why we integrate energy modeling, energy recovery, and green design principles into every project, from LEED-certified schools to net zero facilities.
Each project raises the bar.
From energy modeling to chilled beam systems, from commissioning to code compliance, we deliver highly coordinated designs. Our engineers are fluent in Revit, AutoCAD, and BIM coordination, ensuring seamless integration from concept to closeout.
We don’t shy away from problems.
If something unexpected happens, we roll up our sleeves, communicate early and often, and get it right.
It’s why our clients keep coming back.
And why our engineers stay, year after year.

Our History

1981-1990

1981: Tom Shrout opens Shrout & Associates with his wife, Judy.  Tom’s first project is a referral from his good friend and founder of Lexington Mechanical, the late Jim Dorough. Later that year, Tom begins working on several small multi-family housing projects across Kentucky.

1984: Our first client is Transylvania University. For the next 15 years, our firm provides nearly all of Transy’s mechanical and electrical engineering.

1985: The late Tom Tate joins Mr. Shrout to become Shrout Tate Consulting Engineers.

1991-2000

1994: The office moves from Westland Drive to Burt Road with seven employees. Our business begins to provide mechanical & electrical engineering for K-12 school systems including Scott, Laurel, and Clark Counties.

2000: As Shrout Tate Consulting Engineers grows to 12 employees, Tyler Wilson joins the team as a Principal in September. This same year, the company celebrates the late Tom Tate’s retirement.

2001-2010

2001: Our name changes to Shrout Tate Wilson Consulting Engineers.

2002: Shrout Tate Wilson Engineers designs the first Certified LEED Platinum building in Kentucky and southeast region – The Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest Visitor’s Center.

2007: STW becomes the first MEP firm in the state to purchase an MEP license for Revit.

2008: Continuity during the recession: STW maintains a steady business and not a single STW employee is laid off during this period. Our focus is on relationships – the same principle on which Mr. Shrout founded our firm.

2010: Tom Shrout retires. The STW family celebrates his legacy, alongside his friends and family. Later that same year, Whitley Casey joins Tyler Wilson as a Principal.

2011-2020

2011: Ralph Whitley joins Tyler Wilson and Whitley Casey as a Principal.

2011: STW’s 22 employees move to the Flatiron building on Winchester Road.

2014: 2014: Nick Morgan joins Tyler Wilson, Ralph Whitley, and Whitley Casey as a Principal. Later, STW and KTA, Inc. announce a merger of the two firms. At the close of the year, STW has opened a second office in Louisville, KY, and our staff has grown to 35+, managing $500,000,000 in construction.

2017: STW is honored to serve as the MEP engineer for a project awarded the distinguished AIA Kentucky Honor Award.

2019: Ecofibre Headquarters in Georgetown, KY is awarded LEED Platinum certification, becoming the second such project for STW.

2020: STW expands services to include Commissioning.

2021-NOW

2021: South Carolina Location Opens

2022: Robbie Bottoms joins Tyler Wilson, Ralph Whitley, Whitley Casey, and Nick Morgan as a Principal.

2023: Charleston & Louisville Offices Move Locations

2024: Brandon Slusher, PE is announced Associate.
